Lennon and McCartney's A TOOT AND A SNORE IN '74
Thursday, February 4, 2010
The Beatles split up with much acrimony in 1970, but that wasn't actually the end of John Lennon and Paul McCartney making music together. The pair reunited one last time - in Burbank, of all places - one night in 1974.
Lennon was in LA producing the Harry Nilsson album that would become Pussy Cats. Lennon had separated from Yoko Ono and was in the midst of an 18-month drug and booze bender he would later call his "lost weekend". One night when Lennon was working on the Nilsson album, McCartney arrived and the two began a jam session with none other than Stevie Wonder on keyboards.
What could have been a turning point in pop music history - Lennon and McCartyney, reunited at last - instead became a long and sometimes unlistenable mess, with a clearly stoned Lennon on lead vocals and a subdued McCartney on drums. The recording was never officially released, but became the widely-circulated bootleg A Toot and a Snore in '74. It's not easy listening, but it is fascinating document of a Beatles reunion gone wrong.
