MILLENNIUM to return... without Chris Carter?

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

In a very (very, very) surprising bit of news, the late '90s Chris Carter series Millennium is apparently in the works to return as a feature film... But without Chris Carter involved.

Screen Rant reports that a group of independent investors approached Millennium star Lance Henriksen about making an independent film based on the show, which Fox would apparently distribute. The site also reports that director Brett A. Hart, who recently directed Henriksen in Bone Dry, is one of the names being talked about as a possible director. Hart told the site:

As a tremendous admirer of "The Millennium Series" I'm of course very intrigued by the recent rumors that there may indeed be a full length feature on the horizon. If any one can get "Millennium" made its Lance and it's been a long time coming. It's time to give the fans what they've been patiently waiting to see… More insight into the aberrant world of Frank Black… while further elevating and merging storylines, characterization and visuals… and finally closure for one of the finest series ever created. Let's hope as the title sequence suggests "The Time is near"… and As I've already publicly stated… my passion and conviction for the series is so deep that I'd direct "Millennium - The Movie" for free just to see it on the big screen.

Frankly I have my doubts about all of this. I liked Millennium while it was on, but it's seriously old news. Like, Lewinsky-era old news. Not only is the series fairly obscure today, but it was based on the idea that the dawn of a new millennium imperiled the world. We're about to begin the second decade of that new millennium, and I don't see fire raining down from the sky. (Although we came close to it a few times towards the end of W's second term.) The whole point of the show was Frank Black solving crimes while John-Locke-with-a-mustache stood in the shadows behind him and said cryptic things about the big terrible thing that was coming January 1st, 2000. I mean, it was called Millennium.

The site also reports a rumor that Fox could be planning an X-Files movie without Carter, following the disastrous box-office performance of I Want to Believe. Now, this one I can half believe. The X-Files made so many people rich for so long, I can see Fox tossing Carter out on his butt the same way that Paramount did with poor ol' Rick Berman after a few too many Star Treks failed to beam up big piles of money. Millennium without Carter just sounds weird. But The X-Files is Carter's baby, and no matter how many mistakes he's made with the franchise, he should always have final say in how it's handled.

More on all this as it develops. (And if it develops.)
