MONSTERS BALL's Rokos writing the story for DANTE'S INFERNO game
Monday, October 12, 2009
Shock Till You Drop.com is reporting that Oscar-nominated Monsters Ball screenwriter Will Rokos is now at work on the upcoming Visceral video game based on Dante's Inferno.
It's a surprising announcement at this point, given that the game has been in development for quite some time and is scheduled for release in February. As you can see by the pre-order Amazon link to the left, they've even designed the cover art already.
So, why are they just bringing aboard a writer now? My guess is that they have the game's visuals and essential story locked, but they're still having trouble with dialogue or other aspects that can be changed without junking all the work they've already done. (Checking out Rokos' IMDB page, it looks like he hasn't written anything other than Monsters Ball in 2001.)
At first the idea of a video game based on Dante sounds bizarre, even ridiculous. But if you think about it, Dante's quest through the nine circles of Hell to save Beatrice has a perfect structure for a game, with levels and monsters ideal for "bossfights" already described in detail in the original epic poem. The designers are apparently going to be surprisingly faithful to the poem, although they will tweak things to give the player more opportunities for combat (like making the plain of unbaptized babies into a insectlike horde of hungry, demonic infants.)
