Celebrities recreating their iconic roles

Thursday, December 3, 2009

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Empire magazine photographed various celebrities re-enacting their most iconic roles while dressed up in classy duds.

In some cases the celebrities had aged quite a bit from their glory days, and the contrast between who they were and who they are was striking. In other cases the celebrity was just sitting there in a chair and it was hard to tell what movie they were supposed to be referencing, or they were the stars of an ongoing series so there was nothing terribly dramatic about them "re-enacting" it. Still, it's downright trippy seeing Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood stepping into their Unforgiven roles nearly two decades later (and they were playing old guys back then) and finally seeing Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins back on opposite sides of protective glass.

(But seeing Ben Stiller, the freaky part isn't watching him reprise his pouty supermodel from Zoolander. The freaky part is wondering where he got that gigantic head. Seriously, he looks like a bobblehead version of himself, here.)

A few other things were puzzling. While it's sort of a cute idea to have Woody and Buzz from Toy Story in this gallery, they're not dressed differently and they're posed in a pretty standard shot standing there surrounded by little toy Martians, so what's the point? And I didn't even know what "classic" movie Keira Knightley and James McAvoy had been in together. (I looked it up: Atonement. Jeez, is that one even out on Blu-Ray yet?) And Jack Nicholson looks like they caught him on the way to the gym... Which they probably did.

But all that aside, these are some amazing photos. They'd be worth seeing even just for the shot of Morpheus ten years on... With a full head of hair!

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
