The making of GINGER SNAPS werewolves

Saturday, December 5, 2009

This is an interesting behind-the-scenes special effects clip, even if you've never seen Ginger Snaps.

In it we see a full-scale werewolf clay sculpture as the film's effects artists discuss bulking it up, adding fur and turning it into a suit that will be worn by an actor. (The final version also had a different face that somehow managed to look a bit like actress Katherine Isabelle while also looking like a giant dog monster. Tricky, that.) I could be wrong, but I believe that's director John Fawcett in the dark shirt.

It's a pretty informative walk-through of the process, with glimpses of a little maquette statue, various werewolf feet in progress, the works. We also get to see the artificial bone structure that went inside the suit, and finally we get a look at the full monster in action - I'm guessing for the scene where Ginger is first attacked. Like a lot of effects it doesn't look as good when seen in bright light, but it still looks really creepy.

The US release of the Ginger Snaps DVD is very basic, it's just the movie without any deleted scenes or making-of stuff, while the Canadian release apparently features this clip and lots of other cool stuff. Lucky Canucks.

Note that this clip features a lingering look at naked, droopy, clay werewolf boobs. They're just about as unsexy as boobs get, but they still might be NSFW.

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
