Wachowskis working on sci-fi Iraq movie with Huffington; Lana Wachowski comes out

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

I know, that headline reads like a bit of random celebrity word salad from a spam email. But this stuff is really happening: the Wachowski brothers are apparently at work on a sci-fi movie about the Iraq war, set 90 years from now. Lefty political commentator Arianna Huffington is in it. And the longstanding rumors about Larry Wachowski have at last been confirmed, and Larry is now officially a girl named Lana.

On her Twitter page, Huffington posted a series of tweets about working with the Wachowskis on what she described as a " futuristic movie on Iraq". She jokingly referred to one of the shots as depicting "what I'll look like in 90 years". (She looked the same as she does today, only she had a kind of sci-fi beehive hairdo.) And Huffington also posted a couple of pictures of Lana Wachowski, specifically referring to her as Lana and a she, seemingly confirming the rumors that Wachowski has undergone a gender transition. In the picture below you can see, from left to right, Andy Wachowski, Huffington and Lana Wachowski.

Huh. Lana frankly looks better (and a hell of a lot happier) than Larry did 10 years ago. Andy looks rather sour and stand-offish, but then he's been trying to work the reclusive badass thing since the Clinton administration.

There's been all sorts of speculation about this latest Wachowski project, with various sources suggesting that it could be everything from an adaptation of David Mitchell's novel Cloud Atlas to a simple makeup test for another project. If Huffington seems like an unlikely actor, it's worth remembering that she has recently been lending her voice to Fox's The Cleveland Show, and the Wachowskis have brought in left-leaning celebs for small roles in their other pictures. (Writer Cornel West, for instance, was one of the leaders of Zion in both The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.)

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
