MUSIC FROM SPACE: Tom Waits - FOR NO ONE

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

That N.A.S.A. video featuring Tom Waits as a red cartoon cloud of evil isn't the first time that Waits has starred in an animated music video. That distinction belongs to 1979's Tom Waits for No One. Directed by John Lamb, the short film features rotoscoped footage of Waits cavorting with a stripper while he does one of his rambling, skuzzy jazz tomcat raps. (I'm a Waits fan, but I'm all about his crazy, experimental rocker side; his noodly piano beatnik stuff can make me wanna open a vein.)

I don't think this short represents Waits at his best, the animation is kind of crude and American Pop-y, and it's not safe for work... But Tom Waits for No One is definitely worth seeing just as a historical curio. I guarantee you've never seen a cartoon quite like this before.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
