Another FANTASTIC MR. FOX pic online

Friday, July 17, 2009

Thanks to Comingsoon.net, a new photo is online from The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Based on a book by Roald Dahl (James and the Giant Peach,) the film is directed by indie vet Wes Anderson (Rushmore, etc.) and features the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Bill Murray. The story concerns a fox family beset by three nasty farmers.

This photo doesn't creep me out quite as much as the last one did. Mr. Fox looks more alive here, not quite as taxidermied. But so far the character designs in this movie aren't really working for me. You look at the stop-motion characters in, say, Coraline or the Aardman shorts, and they have a natural appeal to them, even in still photos. But the Mr. Fox characters seem gangly, stiff and glassy-eyed. Their fur looks kind of dry and brittle, it makes me think of petting a dog that's been rolling around in the dirt.

Still, the film features songs by Jarvis Cocker, and Bill Murray as a badger. So, it's a must-see on that basis, alone.

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
