First pics of DOCTOR WHO's 11th Doctor online

Monday, July 20, 2009

We already knew that when Doctor Who returned in 2010, there would be big changes. Stephen Moffat would replace Russell T Davies as show runner, Matt Smith would replace David Tennant as the Doctor, Karen Gillan would replace Catherine Tate as companion, the Tardis interior would get a makeover. It was going to be a lot to get used to at once.

Well, the first photos from the upcoming season are now online courtesy the UK's Daily Mail tabloid, and... Oh, dear. It looks like the transition is going to be a bumpy ride indeed. Admittedly "fashion critic" isn't really part of my job description, but this is some seriously bad couture.

Is that really how Matt Smith is going to look as Doctor Who's 11th Doctor? Yikes. Admittedly it's an improvement over the clown get-up that Colin Baker wore as the Doctor back in the '80s, but that's about the best I can say about it. It makes Smith look like a dorky college kid who tried to dress "smart," but failed. It's like he grabbed random stuff from a thrift store; everything is too big and the colors are all wrong. Here's hoping this is just one-off outfit the Doctor is wearing as he tries to infiltrate a sinister chess club.

There are also photos showing Smith with Gellan and a Tardis that looks quite a bit larger (and brighter) than we're used to seeing. That thing's huge enough that the whole "bigger on the inside" reveal will probably be a lot less dramatic. It almost looked like you could fit the Tardis bridge into that thing.

In related news: The Daily Mail is also reporting that Torchwood star John Borrowman was in a serious car accident that ended with shards of broken glass in his eye. Fortunately, it seems he walked away with only minor injuries and will make a full recovery.

My understanding is that the old TARDIS was in bad repair and needed replacing. This one looks more like the ones from the 1960's, though the white around the windows is really the biggest difference.

As for the outfit, I think it looks okay; it could use a vest, though, to cement the tweedy, professorial look they seem to be going for. For goodness' sake, though, they need to do something with that awful haircut.

A Tardis THAT big seems like it could cause some story problems. I'm not sure if they can even move it indoors, now. How are they supposed to materialize in some random spaceship's shadowy corridors? You couldn't fit that thing in a corridor!

I think Tennant's clothes read as "hipster college professor" a lot better than these duds do. You can do geek chic right or you can do it wrong... And this strikes me as far more geek than chic.
