Chris Carter's FENCEWALKER

Thursday, July 16, 2009

A decade ago, the spectacular success of The X-Files had made Chris Carter a Hollywood golden boy. But then reviews were lukewarm for the the first X-Files movie, his other series Millennium never really caught on, Harsh Realm and The Lone Gunmen tanked and The X-Files began a long, slow slide before it finally left the air in 2002. Last year's The X-Files: I Want to Believe was the first new project from Carter in quite a while, and its disappointing performance does not bode well at all for the X-Files franchise.

So, what's Carter been up to these days? Well, I was surprised to learn he's already been working on a new movie, and it sounds like it could be quite a departure.

Fencewalker is a low-budget indie starring Supernatural's Katie Cassidy and featuring Xzibit, the rapper-turned-actor who had a small role in I Want to Believe. In 2008 The Hollywood Reporter described the film as a dark, semi-autobiographical, coming-of-age drama, set in Carter's hometown of Bellflower, CA. The paper also claimed that Carter was shooting the film "in secret" around LA, using funds he had raised himself.

Since then, there have been plenty of rumors... Rumors that the film is finished, but never found a distributor. Rumors that the film is actually a horror picture. There have even been rumors that it's somehow tied to The X-Files - with Xzibit presumably playing the same character he played in I Want to Believe. (Unlikely as that sounds, there would be a certain logic to it. The X-Files series finale set up an apocalypse scenario for 2012. That was clearly a plan for a future X-Files project, but Carter's rapidly running out of time to do anything with it.)

The only thing we know for sure is that Fencewalker is being worked on in intense secrecy, with Carter's reps refusing to confirm the film exists at all. That kind of thing made sense in the '90s, when Carter had an anxious nation waiting to learn what happened to Mulder's sister... But in 2009, maybe Carter needs to stop Trusting No One and start trying to get a little buzz happening, here.

There was an anonymous comment here, but I deleted it because it contained an attack on Carter for his personal life, and this blog don't play that mess. Say whatever you wanna say about the guy's work, but whatever he does or doesn't do when he's off the clock ain't our business.

The film does exist, it's a bit controversial and stars Katie Cassidy as one of the leads (she's great as always!)....hope they release it, the script read great!

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
