STRANGE TOONS: HONEYMOON HOTEL

Monday, July 13, 2009

Honeymoon Hotel is quite notable in animation history for being the first Warner Brothers cartoon released in color. (Well, a limited approximation of color, using just two colors to stand in surprisingly well for the full spectrum.) And yet it rarely screens today, and I can't even find it on DVD. What gives?

Well, as much as we tend to think of the old cartoons as kid stuff today, the fact is that they were meant for adult audiences. (That's why a lot of really shocking stuff gets trimmed out when those cartoons air on TV nowadays.) Honeymoon Hotel starts off in a cute little bug world, where cute little bug people ride around in their cute little bug cars... And then the short makes an abrupt left turn into a raunchy tale about two newlywed bugs who are desperate for some privacy so they can finally consummate their marriage. It's some fun stuff, but it's probably not safe for work and it's definitely not for kids.

It's a little unclear. You have to click on 0 comments to get to a posting area.
Anyway I believe this is on the 42nd Street DVD. It was made as a cartoon companion piece to the Dick Powell "Shuffle Off to Buffalo" number;. They are hilarious to watch together.

"Honeymoon Hotel" can be found on the "Footlight Parade" DVD.

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
