The DOCTOR WHO movie isn't happening
Saturday, July 11, 2009
I'm saddened to report that the Doctor Who movie starring David Tennant and written and produced by outgoing show runner Russell T. Davies isn't going to happen after all. Davies himself debunked the rumors in an interview with UGO.com.
"No, sadly it's the internet running out of control," Davies says. "It ran so out of control that my agent's assistant thought that I was writing a film and put it on the website and I was like, trust me I've got plenty of other work to do! But I think it will happen one day, just because people keep talking about it, and the fact that they keep talking about it means there must some interest, somewhere. So not right now, but I think it could exist because back in the nineteen sixties, they made two films that were spin-offs from the television series and they're still repeated on British television to this day. I think one day, the public good will will simply summon a film into existence!"

RTD freely admits he lies all the time, and he lied about how the project got on his agent's website, so I wouldn't trust what he says as proof it's not happening.
I'd like to believe there will be another twist in this story, and it will turn out a movie is happening. But I did think it was a little odd that the BBC would want to make Doctor Who movies starring David Tennant, when Matt Smith is still new in the role. I think Smith is going to have a rocky start as the Doctor, Tennant is a hard act to follow. If Tennant was doing the movies, that could just make Smith look worse. Peter Davison had such a rough time following Tom Baker... Imagine if Baker was still playing the Doctor in movies!
