PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE remake trailer

Thursday, September 10, 2009

When people dismiss Ed Wood as "the worst director who ever lived," I just shake my head and mutter something rude under my breath.

The worst director who ever lived is some hack who made a lot of totally boring, stupid, forgettable movies. Like, some guy who directed a lot of bad TV movies, and then his big break was one of the Mighty Ducks pictures. That's the worst director who ever lived. Not Ed Wood.

Wood was a kind of twisted genius, an outsider artist of cinema. His movies are inept in a unique, imaginative and very entertaining way.

Below you'll find the clip for the upcoming remake of Wood's masterpiece (of sorts), Plan 9 From Outer Space.

Remaking a Wood picture, especially Plan 9, strikes me as a pretty lousy idea. Play it straight and it will just look awkward and amateurish. Play it for camp and you're doomed, the original will be a hell of a lot funnier and weirder than you could ever be. The only people who will be interested in seeing this will probably be Wood's fans... And we love Ed just the way he was, we don't need no remakes!

(And seriously, I don't see a Bela Lugosi, Vampira or Tor Johnson anywhere in this clip, and if you don't even have the sense to include that holy trinity in your Plan 9 remake, then you can just get your punk ass out of here.)

Pretty sure Tor is at 1:42ish in the trailer, so yeah...maybe you should watch it again.

I saw the back of a bald zombie head. If that's Tor, they sure ain't overselling him.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
