Romero's SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD clip online

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

George Romero is in an odd position these days. On the one hand, he's the man who pretty much single-handedly invented the modern zombie genre with 1968's Night of the Living Dead. His old movies have become critical faves and his influence is freely acknowleged by younger filmmakers. He is a living legend of the horror genre.

But despite all this, his comeback picture Land of the Dead performed below expectations, and his follow-up Diary of the Dead was seen by few and enjoyed by fewer. Romero now finds himself struggling to stay relevant in the zombie genre that he began.

His next zombie picture, Survival of the Dead, is playing this month at the Toronto International Film Festival. The first clip from the film is below. It's a random bit of grisly humor, probably safe for work unless your boss has some crazy zombie phobia or something.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
