Two LIVING DEAD cartoon remakes coming

Thursday, September 17, 2009

George Romero's 1968 horror classic Night of the Living Dead has been remade (several times), endlessly sequelized, ripped-off, parodied, colorized, riffed on by the Rifftrax guys and even 3D-ized. It's been 41 years since the original film was released, but Romero's zombies remain simply unstoppable, they keep coming back from the dead like... Well, like zombies.

But out of all the screwy things that people have done to Night of the Living Dead, nobody has ever adapated it into a feature-length cartoon. Now that's about to change, with the news that two(!) Living Dead cartoons are on the way.

The Heat Vision blog reports that Night of the Living Dead: Origins will be a CGI motion-capture horror show, made in a style that the film's magnificiently-named director Zebediah de Soto describes as "American-style anime."

Well, here's hoping we won't be subjected to anime-style, pretty-boy zombies with emo hair and sad little stars twinkling in their gigantic anime eyes. That's a prospect more terrifying than any movie Romero ever directed.

Weirder still, Night of the Living Dead Reanimated will feature the original film's audio with literally dozens of animators all illustrating the action in their individual styles. It sounds like a confusing and exhausting evening, but the idea does have a certain fascination. The trailer below gives you some idea of what to expect. Around the 28-second mark, Barbara appears to suddenly find herself in A-Ha's old Take On Me video. (Great, so now in addition to zombies, she's gotta worry about weird mechanic guys chasing her with wrenches and that Norwegian guy with the mullet following her around singing those excruciating high notes. This girl can't catch a freakin' break.)

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
