Artists in Ads: Andy Warhol for Braniff Airlines

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

Another entry in our Artists in Ads series. This time, we look at Andy Warhol's commercial for Braniff Air. Warhol always took great delight in selling out - he made it an art form in itself, and he did plenty of commercials and print ads over the years. Still, his appearance here with boxer Sonny Liston was quite probably the most strained, awkward ad that Warhol ever did. (Liston just sits there silently glowering at Warhol through the entire ad, and I'm not sure if that's supposed to be funny or if Liston just really hated Warhol's guts.)

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
