MACHINARIUM: A new flash game from the creators of the cult fave SAMOROST

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

A few years ago, Amanita Design (a game developer company in the Czech Republic) earned a big cult following with Jakub Dvorsky's adorable, surreal and visually gorgeous flash games Samorost and Samorost 2. (If you've never explored the Samorost universe, you have to forget about whatever the heck you were planning for the next hour or two and get clicking right now.) The games follow a little, pajama-clad man as he wanders around strange planetoids having adventures, with the visuals realized through an effective combo of 2D cartooning and detailed, miniature landscapes and props. I'm not a big fan of point-and-clicks, but the Samorost games are really superb time-wasters.

I am delighted to report that later this year Amanita will release a new Dvorsky game, a streampunkish little robot adventure called Machinarium. There's a clip of some gameplay footage below. The folks at the Adventure Gamers site also got to try a hands-on preview, and their report makes the game sound very promising.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
