View-Master and ASTEROIDS movies, and the hi-fi pizza of the apocalypse

Friday, July 3, 2009

Years ago, in his comic book series Eightball, cartoonist Daniel Clowes did a story called The Future where he gazed into his crystal ball and offered his predictions. In one panel, he predicted that the day would come when mankind had simply run out of ideas. Then we would endlessly recycle and recombine old ideas in all sorts of ridiculous ways, until somebody invented the hi-fi pizza... at which point the universe would apparently get sick of us, and the world would abruptly end. (Click this link to buy the Clowes collection Twentieth Century Eightball.)

Well, a few minutes ago, when I read the news that actual motion pictures are in the works based not only on the cruddy old Asteroids video game, but also the View-Master toy, there was no denying the terrible truth.

We'll be eating our hi-fi pizzas any day now.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
