ZACHARY QUINTO FALLS DOWN explained, sort of

Friday, July 3, 2009

The last week or so, a video has been circulating around the 'Net, featuring a strange and (seemingly) candid moment with Heroes and Star Trek star Zachary Quinto.

Let's have a look at the clip in question. (Note that the language is NSFW.)

Mr. Butcher and Meatboy are definitely the strangest part of the clip... But now we at least have an explanation for them. They're Quinto's actor friends, and they're dressed as Buddy and Andy, characters who star in bizarre, Adult Swim-ish short films for Quinto's production company Before the Door.

A lot of bloggers seem to think this clip proves that Quinto's a nutty diva, but I don't agree. Assuming this isn't some staged, viral video, I think it's just the paparazzi catching the guy at a really weird, awkward moment. Let's break this down...

Quinto's walking his dog, accompanied by two pals. Presumably they were going to or coming from a Buddy and Andy shoot. Suddenly the paparazzi show up, and that puts Quinto on his guard. Then he trips over the damn dog, in full view of the cameras. Then, still on the ground, he loses his (presumably expensive and quite possibly prescription) sunglasses and angrily growls NOBODY MOVE so he can find the stupid things. In the middle of all that, he discovers his meat pal has gotten stuck trying to get around a light pole, so he rushes back and helps him. (The comment the meat guy says to the cameraman - "This never happens" - could be taken several ways. Maybe it's a clumsy way of saying that Quinto doesn't usually walk around with a butcher and a walking pork chop. Or it could mean that Quinto doesn't normally lose his temper like that. Either way, it's probably true.)

Quinto has been catching a whole lot of snark for 41 very strange seconds out of his life. But hey, given all that was going on, you can hardly blame the guy for not demonstrating the cool, calm composure of a Vulcan.
