Hi-Fi Pizza of the Apocalypse 3: The BAYWATCH movie
Tuesday, July 7, 2009
Inspired by this apocalyptic moment from an old Daniel Clowes Eightball comic, Hi-Fi Pizza of the Apocalypse is a regular Monsters and Rockets feature where we chronicle the Hollywood rehashes, recyclings and recombinings that serve as ominous portents of the End Times.
Today's harbinger of doom: the Baywatch movie.
Variety reports that screenwriter Jeremy Garelick will make his directing debut adapting the syndicated jiggle-fest from the '90s. Garelick plans to turn the film into a comedy on the order of the Police Academy pictures, following two "unlikely lifeguards" as they try to make the grade alongside the hardbodies of the Malibu beach patrol.
Garelick admits to having never seen the original Baywatch. While that would normally be a major impediment for a writer/director attempting a franchise reboot, in this case all Garelick needs to know is that the original featured a lot of busty blonds in red swimsuits, and he's pretty much good to go.
