IN THE FALL OF GRAVITY

Thursday, July 2, 2009

OK, I'll admit that the plot synopsis for R.S. Cole's short film In the Fall of Gravity sounds just a tad too hippie for me. ("A philosophy of life, consciousness and the workings of the universe is explored between the wizard Isomer and his traveling companion Trevor Verity. What unfolds is a moment in time Trevor will not soon forget.") But holy crap, just look at that gorgeous stop-motion animation! Look at the astonishingly lifelike body language of the dwarf guy. Look at the expressiveness of the wizard's face, the subtle, natural movement of his facial muscles as he speaks. I've seen a lot of flesh and blood actors who can't emote that well.

(On this page, Cole explains how he creates the faces of his puppets, using an elaborate cable rig beneath their skin. I was totally lost after about 20 seconds, but the pictures were neat.)

I haven't seen the whole film, but just on a technical basis, this is masterful work. In the Fall of Gravity is available from Amazon and Indieflix. (For a fun extra, here are his characters reviewing Coraline.)

Hey Thanks for the good words man! I put a lot of work into this film and it's always cool to find an impartial review with good stuff to say about it.

Thanks! :)
