Austen vs. zombies, and now aliens!

Friday, April 17, 2009

Perhaps you thought that the tide of Jane Austen adaptations, rip-offs, spin-offs and parodies was finally crashing with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? Think again.

Get ready for Pride and Predator, a Bennet sisters vs. aliens thriller due to hit theaters next year. The Variety story opens with a line I can't resist quoting, even if it reinforces some pretty tired gender stereotyping: "Elton John's Rocket Pictures hopes to make the first Jane Austen adaptation to which men will drag their girlfriends."

Seriously, all of these Jane Austen + Monsters projects really do seem like the punchline from a beer commercial. As we open, a lunky guy is sitting in a darkened theater, watching a Pride and Prejudice adaptation with his girlfriend. She is enraptured, he is grinding his teeth is boredom. But suddenly he has a brainstorm: "You know what this movie needs..?"

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
