TWILIGHT sequel "on hold" for plagiarism lawsuit
Monday, April 20, 2009
Now, I should say right up front that IMDB.com's daily news source, WENN, is awfully sensationalistic and melodramatic. If an actress says she found a director a little tough to work with, the WENN headline will scream that she's just BLASTED him in a shocking new interview. If an actor just had his gall bladder out in a routine procedure, the WENN writers will say he's struggling to recover after a BRUSH WITH DEATH.
So, bearing that in mind... WENN is now saying the Twilight movie sequel is on hold because Stephanie Meyer has been accused of plagarism by her former college roommate.
Heidi Stanton - who studied alongside Meyer at Brigham Young University, Utah - claims the vampire books are similar to a short story she wrote when she was a student there.
Stanton filed her lawsuit against Meyer in Utah last Tuesday, alleging idea infringement.
She states in the papers, "Quite frankly, I was shocked when I began watching the movie with my husband last week. I immediately told him that she got that idea from me! I wrote a fictional short story with the same ideas when we were in college together."
Accusations of plagiarism are routine whenever anything is as hugely successful as the Twilight series. It's quite possible Stanton's making it all up. But what if she's telling the truth? Did the entire Twilight franchise just get a stake through the heart?
