Me and my shadow

Friday, April 17, 2009

There is nothing obviously remarkable about this photo. It seems to depict an adult woman and a little girl - perhaps mother and daughter - standing outside of a store and eating bread. But they are not mother and daughter, or sisters, or friends, or strangers. They are the same person.

For Imagine Finding Me, Chino Otsuka's series of "double self-portraits," she inserts modern photos of herself into photos of herself as a child. Once you know what you're looking at, the effect is downright eerie. The younger Otsuka looks at the camera with the innocent eyes of a child, but there is a hint of artifice and mischief in the adult Otsuka's eyes. Otsuka becomes a kind of guardian angel to her child self, or her child self becomes a ghostly remnant following the adult Otsuka.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
