MUSIC FROM SPACE: Massive Attack - KARMACOMA

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

This video is effective on a number of levels. First, Karmacoma is simply a great song, arguably Massive Attack's best. And the scenario of the video is genuinely chilling, with a terrified hitman lost in a hotel where surreal, supernatural badness seems to be happening in every room he passes. And it's also great fun for film geeks, offering the chance to play spot the cult movie reference. (Sure, you got the Shining homage, and maybe the Pulp Fiction stuff. But is the typist with the crazy hair supposed to be Barton Fink? Or Henry Nance from Eraserhead? (Note that the Amazon link pictured above is for the album Maxinquaye, featuring Tricky's version of the song.)

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
