BUFFY movie killed by Gellar's pregnancy?
Monday, April 13, 2009
Some online sources are speculating that the announcement of Sarah Michelle Gellar's pregnancy has put the kibosh on the rumored Buffy movie, an idea we don't understand at all. After all, it's not like plenty of actresses don't have a baby and then return to work shortly after.
We don't even think that Gellar's upcoming pilot for HBO, The Wonderful Maladays, would keep her from starring in a Buffy film. After all, David Duchovny (to use an example) starred in the recent X-Files film while his cable series Californication is still airing. It's not that unusual for actors to star in movies while their TV shows are on hiatus.
No, the main reason we think a Buffy movie won't happen is that we doubt the studios would be interested in funding it. As much as we adored the show, it was never a blockbuster hit. In recent years movies based on cult hit TV shows haven't fared well at the box-office (the aforementioned X-Files sequel, Joss Whedon's own Serenity, etc.) and it's hard to imagine a movie based on Buffy would really set the box office afire. Add to that Gellar's rep as a bit of a pain on set, and the fact that Gellar's former co-star Alyson Hannigan is now busy with How I Met Your Mother and has arguably become a bigger star than Gellar, and we'd say the project is unlikely at best, for now. Maybe years from now there will be some sort of Buffy reunion. But not as soon as we'd like, if ever.
