MUSIC FROM SPACE: Apples in Stereo - SIGNAL IN THE SKY (LET'S GO)

Sunday, April 19, 2009

If you were a Powerpuff Girls fan way back when, this Apples In Stereo video will be a sweet bit of nostalgia for you. (Remember when the show was still fresh and funny? Remember when the Cartoon Network was running this clip approximately 14 thousands times per day? Remember when the Cartoon Network was still running cartoons?) But even if you were never into the 'Puffs, this clip is still a very well-made little curio, bringing the show's goofy, resolutely 2D cartoon mayhem into the third dimension.

The Apples in Stereo recorded this sweet and sticky piece of bubblegum pop for the show's Heroes and Villains soundtrack album (click the picture above to purchase it on Amazon), a danceable collection of songs featuring respected acts like Devo, Frank Black and Shonen Knife.

Following its heyday early this millennium the show slowly faded away and was finally canceled in 2005 with one episode (See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey) apparently left unaired in the US. There was a baffling Powerpuff Girls anime series that ran in Japan from 2006-2007, and this January a brand-new Powerpuff Girls episode aired here to celebrate the show's 10-year anniversary. (I'm irked to say I'd never even heard of this new episode until I read about it on the show's Wikipedia page, just now.)

It's been a decade since Professor Utonium first spilled that Chemical X. Settle back and watch as the Powerpuff Girls answer the Signal in the Sky, and once again, the day is saved.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
