Matt Parkman as Harry Mudd?

Monday, August 10, 2009

Heroes star Greg Grunberg has been J.J. Abrams' pal since they were kids, and Grunberg has appeared in almost every Hollywood project Abrams has ever done. (That was Grunberg's voice as Kirk's stepfather in Abrams' Star Trek.)

Now Grunberg has been lobbying to play the role of Harry Mudd, the comic villain from the original Trek. The sequel's writers are reportedly considering it, with Robert Orci telling SCI FI Wire, "that's a good idea."

It's kind of a cute idea, but frankly Grunberg just doesn't seem right for the part. Mudd is a flamboyant, loud, sleazy guy, very over-the-top. Grunberg just radiates decent, regular guy-hood, he's not the intergalactic con-man type at all. Jack Black was previously rumored for the role, and he would be perfect for young Harry Mudd. You need a guy with the chutzpa to rock a handlebar mustache and a hat with a feather.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
