Today's reboots: LESTAT, POLTERGEIST, GODZILLA

Saturday, August 15, 2009

Seriously, Hollywood is announcing so many damn reboots these days that I can hardly keep up with 'em all.

Today we have news that big screen reboots are in the works for The Vampire Lestat, Poltergeist and Godzilla. Godzilla makes sense. After all, nobody was all that thrilled with the 1997 version. (Note to Hollywood: If you're making a Godzilla movie, Godzilla should look like freakin' Godzilla. If you can't even get that right, forget about it.) There's not to lose by trying again with Godzilla. Poltergeist also seems rather inevitable, it's kind of amazing it hasn't been remade already.

The Vampire Lestat is the odd one in the bunch. Neil Jordan's 1994 Anne Rice adaptation Interview with the Vampire was a critical and commercial hit, but then the movie franchise skipped Rice's follow-up novel The Vampire Lestat and instead adapted the third book in the series for 2002's Queen of the Damned. It seems sort of backwards to start the series over seven years later with The Vampire Lestat. And the news that Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to star is just... weird.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
