STRANGE TOONS: VISIONS OF FRANK

Sunday, August 16, 2009

As a total barking goon for the work of genius-weirdo cartoonist Jim Woodring, I was positively giddy a few years back when I heard about the DVD Visions of Frank, featuring a collection of animated shorts based on Woodring's superbly strange Frank comics.

But then the DVD finally arrived, and I ended up having pretty mixed feelings about it. It featured a lot of impressive work, and I loved the stuff that came close to capturing Woodring's own style. But there were too many cartoons that felt like the animators were just using Woodring's work as a foundation to do their own, less interesting stuff. I was glad to have seen the DVD, but not so glad to have paid full price for it.

Well, far as I can tell the DVD isn't commercially available anymore, but Youtube user PompMIKI has been kind enough to post a big pile of the cartoons online. You can start with the best of the bunch below, and click around to see the other six.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
