OUTLAND remake coming, because somebody, somewhere probably wanted one

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

The 1981 Sean Connery picture Outland was a two-and-a-half stars movie all the way, with an adequate plot and some pretty cool production design. But it wasn't a hit with critics or at the box office, and today it's all but forgotten save for the geeks who occasionally have bitter arguments about whether the film was right or wrong in depicting people exploding horribly when they were exposed to the vacuum of space.

Given how obscure the film is today, it's a bit surprising to learn that Shoot 'Em Up director Michael Davis as at work on a remake. But then again, every damn movie from the '80s is going to be remade eventually. Seriously, we will see the Mac and Me remake before 2012, just you wait.

(It just occurred to me that the Outland remake will be remaking a movie that was itself based on High Noon. Sometimes it feels like every post I write should be a Hi-Fi Pizza of the Apocalypse.)

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
