MUSIC FROM SPACE: THE KNTV SHOW - INTERCOURSE
Monday, November 16, 2009
It never ceases to amaze me how people in the UK and people in the US have such incredibly different views about what sort of TV is acceptable for kids.
In England, Doctor Who is apparently still considered a kids' show that adults happen to watch. Here, the mix of scary monsters and unorthodox sexual stuff means that the show is pitched at folks in their late teens and older. The idea of a six-year-old watching it seems kind of bizarre and arguably inappropriate. (Seriously, would you want to try and explain Captain Jack to a toddler?) Over here The Mighty Boosh is absolutely an adult show, it's the kind of thing kids are only supposed to see if they sneak out of their rooms at bedtime and watch it from a hiding place at the top of the stairs. But I gather that in the UK you have little boys and girls running around the playground quoting Old Gregg and Tony Harrison, an idea it's hard to wrap my provincial American brain around.
In the UK, The KNTV Show is an educational kids' program that wins awards. Here in the US, you probably couldn't show this clip to a kid without getting arrested. The show features Kierky and Nietschze - named after Søren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche - two strange little fellows from "Slabovia" who sing agonizingly catchy punk rock songs to teach kids about various subjects. In this one, they sing about sex. It may be perfectly appropriate for little kids in Scotland, but over here this clip is probably not safe for work. (Even if watching the clip doesn't get you fired, you'll drive everybody nuts hollering "Intercourse! Intercourse!" in your cubicle all afternoon.)
(Once again stolen from the good folks at Cartoon Brew.)
