BUFFY movie rumors
Wednesday, April 8, 2009
Look, we want a Buffy movie as much anybody else does. (Well, OK, that's understating things. We arguably want a Buffy movie more than anybody else does.) But we suspect that the rumors surrounding a possible Buffy movie are just that... Rumors.
Maybe this is just a case of wishful thinking from some fans. Maybe Sarah Michelle Gellar herself has embarked on a rather sad, Duchovny-esque campaign to try and whip up some interest in the project. (For years she was against a Buffy movie, but now that her career has cooled off, it wouldn't be too surprising that she'd want to return to the franchise that made her a star.) But it's important to bear in mind that while Buffy creator Joss Whedon is a superstar in Geekland, to the larger entertainment industry he's a guy with a couple of cult hits (Buffy and Angel) a failed TV series that became a failed movie (Firefly and Serenity) and a current show that's struggling Friday nights on Fox (Dollhouse.) Whedon's tried to launch a variety of Buffy projects over the years (an animated series, spinoffs for Spike, Faith and even Giles) and nothing has materialized save for those Dark Horse Buffy comic books.
We'll keep following the rumors, and we'll let you know if anything promising turns up.
