DOLLHOUSE season finale won't air on Fox
Thursday, April 9, 2009
Today word has come down that the season finale of Joss Whedon's struggling sci-fi series Dollhouse will not air on the Fox Network. While this would seem to indicate that the show has been cancelled, Fox is insisting that the show's fate has yet to be decided.
Series writer Tim Minear posted about the situation on Whedonesque:
"Because we scrapped the original pilot—and in fact cannibalized some of its parts for other eps—we really ended up with 12 episodes. But the studio makes DVD and other deals based on the original 13 number (that was ordered.) So we created a stand-alone kind of coda episode. Which is the mythical new episode 13. The network had already paid for 13 episodes, and this included the one they agreed to let us scrap for parts. It does not include the one we made to bring the number back up to 13 for the studio side and its obligations. We always knew it would be for the DVD for sure, but we also think Fox should air it because it's awesome."
According to E! Online, the episode is reportedly set in the future, after the apocalypse. It will presumably appear on the season one DVD.
Seriously? At this point Whedon has been kicked around by the Fox Network so much that, much as we adore the man, we're starting to get frustrated with him for trusting them over and over again. He reminds us of a girl who sticks with a rotten boyfriend because she's convinced she can "change" him. Just walk away, Joss. Just walk away.
