SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS movie coming
Wednesday, April 8, 2009
As thrilled as we are by the Ghostbusters franchise moving into games, we are far less thrilled about the prospect of the 2005 Playstation 2 sleeper hit Shadow of the Colossus becoming a film.
The original game is a true epic, with spectacular monster fights... But it is also dark, moody and very quiet for long stretches. (The lead character Wander has nobody to talk to save for his loyal horse Agro, so between the battles you often hear nothing but the wind or the gallop of Agro's hooves.) The world of the game is as much of a character as Wander himself, and the action requires strategy more than simple button-mashing.
The game is a work of art (Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro has called it the Citizen Kane of games) and unless somebody as skilled as del Toro himself was directing the movie version, we can only imagine the film wouldn't come close to the game in terms of quality.
