The "living statue" business of Amanda Palmer from the Dresden Dolls

Monday, August 3, 2009

Before Amanda Palmer became famous as the singer/songwriter for the "Brechtian punk cabaret" band The Dresden Dolls, she worked as a living statue street performer. She's even referenced her old job in her songs. ("I can paint my face / And stand very, very still / It's not very practical / But it still pays the bills")

In recent years she's occasionally reprised her old living statue characters (here she is as one called the 8-Foot Bride,) but her days of painting her face and standing very, very still seem to be mostly behind her. So I was surprised to learn that the website for her old living statues business is still online.

Judging by her press clippings on the site, it seems like her business was going pretty well. It's interesting to read her old bio, and see how much it stresses her background in performance art and theater, with just a mention at the end about her music.

At least Amanda Palmer will have to Shut up. Bad news is, Gaiman can't make a film to save his life.

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
