Abrams open to Khan, Shatner in TREK sequels

Monday, May 18, 2009

J.J. Abrams tells MTV that he's quite open to the possibility of some familiar faces returning in the inevitable Star Trek sequels - including the deadly genetic superman Khan played by Ricardo Montalban in the original series and 1982's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. More surprisingly, Abrams doesn't rule out a return for William Shatner as Kirk, even though Shatner's version of the character died in 1994's Star Trek: Generations.

"The fun of this (new alternate Trek reality) is that the destiny of these characters is in their hands — it's not constrained by the pre-existing films or TV series," Abrams explained. "Believe me, whether it's William Shatner or Khan ... it would be ridiculous to not be open to those ideas.

"It'll be fun to hear what (writer/producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman) are thinking about Khan," Abrams said. "The fun of this timeline is arguing that different stories, with the same characters, could be equally if not more compelling than what's been told before.

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
