Gilliam has another go at QUIXOTE

Friday, May 15, 2009

Terry Gilliam often suffers bad luck while making his movies, but the disasters that plagued Brazil and Baron Munchhausen were nothing compared to the utter debacle that was Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote shoot. Gilliam coped with flash floods, noisy jets strafing his set, a desperately ill leading man and more, before he was finally forced to abandon the film with just a few minutes shot. The aborted project has become the stuff of Hollywood legend, and Lost in La Mancha, a documentary about the production, went on to become a hit in its own right. But now, a decade later, Reuters is reporting that Gilliam is getting ready to return to the project. Gilliam is teaming with his Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas screenwriter Tony Grisoni, and the shoot is scheduled for next spring.

"Nearly 10 years on," Grisoni said, "I find myself lending a hand to get that crazed, giggling bedlamite back in the saddle. I'm talking about Don Quixote. In spite of God and the devil, he shall ride again."

Johnny Depp is expected to return to the role of a modern Sancho Panza, which he was slated to play in the first version. But Depp has two Disney pictures scheduled to shoot in 2009, which could delay Gilliam's production. Jean Rochefort, who played Quixote in Gilliam's first run at the material, is now 79 and not expected to return.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
