Welcome to the not-Star Trek edition of Newschunks. Let's pull our eyes away from all the exciting Star Trek stuff going on, and have a look at what else is happening in Geekdom today.
REEVES TO STAR IN JEKYLL REMAKE: I think Keanu Reeves is an underrated actor (I'm not saying he's really good, just that's he'd underrated.) But asking him to play two roles in a movie (let alone two extremely different roles) is just a terrible idea. You're lucky if he's got enough acting in him for one role, let alone two!
LOST STATUE MYSTERY REVEALED... WELL, PARTLY: Michael Emerson (Lost's Ben Linus) has revealed that the giant, 4-toed statue on the island is indeed the hippo-headed Egyptian Goddess Taweret, just as many fans suspected. "She’s Taweret, the goddess of childbirth," Emerson says. "That dovetails in pretty well with our themes, wouldn’t you say?" That it does, Mogwai. But why is there an enomorous statue of a pregnant hippo lady on the island? We'll apparently see the statue's face in the season finale next week, but who knows when or if we'll ever know the statue's origin or true purpouse.
MOORE'S VIRTUALITY IS VIRTUALLY DOOMED: Various sources are reporting that the pilot for Virtuality, the Fox series from Battlestar Galactica showrunner Ron Moore, will now air on the 4th of July. A holiday. On a Saturday night. That's a slot guaranteed to be seen by six or seven people at most, and would seem to indicate that Fox has no intention of turning the pilot into a full series. Jeez, between this and the Joss Whedon Firefly/Dollhouse disasters, Fox is doing a cracking job of making genre fans hate them forever. Way to go, guys!
SPEAKING OF DOLLHOUSE: The 12th and quite likely final episode airs tonight. (Well, it's the final episode other than the 13th, which we won't get to see in America because Fox is just plain nasty.) Rather than all the fans starting some big letter campaign pleading with Fox to renew the show, let's just send letters to Whedon begging him to do his next show on cable.
