MUSIC FROM SPACE: Nora Jones - SINKIN' SOON

Friday, May 1, 2009

I know what you're thinking. "Music From Space is supposed to feature weird music videos of interest to the age 25-55, sci-fi/horror geek demographic! But Nora Jones is that mainstream, Grammy-winning, jazz singer lady I hear sometimes when I'm at the dentist! What gives?!" (Well, your thoughts probably didn't include that link to Jones' page on Wikipedia... But if they did, I'm impressed.)

Not so long ago, I'd never given Jones much thought either. But then I saw a few of her music videos, and they were as strange and arty, in their own mellow way, as anything Bjork has ever done. And the songs themselves were lovely things, too. Sinkin' Soon, off the album Not Too Late (click the cover image to buy it on Amazon) is a roguish charmer possessing what Jones has aptly described as a "drunken sailor vibe." The video is a little wonder featuring household objects that come to life, through the miracle of stop-motion animation, to form a little jazz combo with Jones (while a little dollhouse Jones joins in on a toy piano.) The song's percussion was done with pots and pans, Tom Waits-style, and Jones ended up busting her teapot. When a musician busts their teapot for you, you know they're the real deal.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
