STAR TOURS to get a prequel makeover and horrible-ization

Saturday, May 2, 2009

It really doesn't feel right to hate George Lucas. I mean, he's George Lucas! He created Star Wars! (Click image at left to buy the original trilogy on DVD from Amazon.) But Lucas has now sucked so hard and so long that it's reached a point where I can understand why Patton Oswald wants to go back to 1993 and kill George Lucas with a shovel. (Audio hilarious, but NSFW.)

Lucas isn't content to just make those unspeakably cruddy prequels and leave it there. Oh, no. He won't leave the original trilogy alone, he's determined to crud them up real good by inserting everything you hated from the prequels. So you get awful CGI Jabba the Hutt and Hayden as the ghost of Darth Vader, and he'll probably find some way to get Jar-Jar in there too unless he can be stopped first. He's got the CGI Clone Wars TV series to provide a link from his prequels to the original trilogy, and he has another, live-action TV series on the way to degrade the franchise even further.

And now he's even going after Star Tours at Disneyland, too.

If you grew up with Star Tours, you probably saw the bogus ads for flights to the various Star Wars planets and wished that just once the Pee Wee Herman robot would steer your little spaceship to Hoth, or maybe Tatooine. Well, be careful what you wish for. Slashfilm reports that Lucasfilm is now filming new footage for the ride - footage that will include Gungans, Geonosians, and other bits of prequel trilogy trash. This won't be a small change. The ride you grew up loving will be gone forever, replaced by this 3D journey into heartbreak. And it'll be Lucas what done it.

Got a stash of your childhood Star Wars comic books or coloring books up in your attic? Lock your doors... Because eventually, Lucas will come for them, and he'll bring scissors, glue and a big stack of glossy photos of Jar-Jar.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
