BUFFY "animated series" rumors

Friday, June 19, 2009

I'd class this one as a rumor so far, and one that could be debunked mere hours from now. But I really want it to be true, so I'm running with this sucker.

Scott Fogg of TV Overmind is reporting that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer "animated series" has gotten the go-ahead. (He's basing this on the word of a friend of his who is an aspring filmmaker who allegedly just got his "big break" when he was offered the chance to produce the series.) No, this apparently wouldn't be full animation. What it would be is "motion comics," featuring semi-animated versions of the Buffy comic books.

It sounds like they would be starting with the Season Eight comics, which tell "canon" stories about what happened to the Buffy characters after the show ended. Joss Whedon has overseen these comics and written some of them. (Click the image at left to buy The Long Way Home (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 8, Vol. 1) He is also supposedly involved with the motion comics, but not much.

"Whedon’s involved," the source tells Fogg, "but not on an ‘in-the-studio’ kind of way. He will pop in at bench-marks and give the thumbs up to make the studio happen. Not as much involvement as any of us want, but its better than not any at all."

If these motion comics are anything like the recent Watchmen motion comics, featuring sound effects and actors reading the dialogue, they should be a lot of fun. The article notes, however, that it's rather doubtful at this point that many of the original actors would return to voice their characters. With a few exceptions, the Buffy actors are all pretty busy with new jobs.

(Note that I'm not trying to call Mr. Fogg a liar by questioning this story so much. I've just become jaded after hearing 10,001 Buffy rumors over the years, approximately 6 of which panned out.)

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
