New "PROJECT TRICO" clip online

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Last month we got a peek at a leaked clip from the upcoming game that was then known only as Trico. It was a new project from Team Ico, the creators of the amazing games Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. (Click the image at left to buy Shadow of the Colossus.) Now a much more elaborate clip is online, and the game's title has been revealed as The Last Guardian.

The creature I previously called a Mega-Possum turns out to be a gryphon... And what a wretched yet weirdly endearing creature it is. It apparently spends the game following you around like a giant puppy, with spears still jutting out of its back following its escape from captivity. Project head Fumito Ueda is a master at creating believable fantasy animals. He made 20-story rock monsters seem real in Colossus, and here he brings the gryphon to life just as vividly. The "boy and his dog" feeling is so strong in this clip that I'm already hoping Ueda doesn't hit us with some tragic ending where the gryphon dies. (Here's hoping that at some point the kid plucks out some of those darn spears. Yowch!)

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
