THE ENIGMA OF AMIGARA FAULT - horror manga
Saturday, June 6, 2009
The Enigma of Amigara Fault is a deeply creepy comics story by Japanese manga horror artist Junji Ito. Originally appearing as a backup story in Ito's book Gyo, The Enigma of Amigara Fault tells the story of a baffling formation that's discovered in a mountainside after a terrible earthquake. There are hundreds of human-sized, human-shaped holes in the rock, and as people flock to see the strange sight, one by one they feel compelled to enter the holes. This is seriously disturbing stuff, the kind of thing the boys from Mystery Science Theater 3000 would call pure nightmare fuel. (Note that you have to read the story right-to-left, manga-style. It's a bit tricky at first, but you'll be surprised how quickly you get used to it.)

I don't get why anyone would want to willingly subject themselves to something that's going to deform and mutilate themselves.
They were basically hypnotized.
It's the allure of bad faith. The hole appears, to them, to be evidence that their lives have meaning.
That's the horrifying part, that these people feel irresistibly drawn to their grotesque doom. If you were there yourself, there would be a you-shaped hole waiting there, and you would find yourself unable to resist going inside.
Yeah. I had some trouble sleeping after reading this. but I'm fine now. :D
What do you think would happen if a super claustrophobic person would read this? I think he would go insane.
