Robot jellyfish, in the sea and in the sky

Thursday, June 18, 2009

No, really. This post is about actual robot jellyfish that can swim through the sea or float with an eerie grace through the air. Click the video below, if you don't believe me.

These gorgeous/horrifying creatures are the work of the Festo corporation, which sounds exactly like the name of a sinister, 21st Century robotics company in a heavy-handed sci-fi allegory from 1973. We've already railed against scientists for not being familiar enough with The X-Files to know that reviving ancient microbes is always a crappy idea. Well, apparently the eggheads at Festo have never seen The Matrix, or they would know that creating robo-squids can only lead to disaster.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
