FUTURAMA picked up by Comedy Central?

Monday, June 8, 2009

All glory to the Hypnotoad! Collider quotes an "inside source" as saying Comedy Central has ordered 13 new episodes of Futurama, the classic sci-fi TV comedy from Simpsons creator Matt Groening. Animation is such a lengthy process that we wouldn't see any new episodes for a while, but the site says that the Futurama production offices are already open and casting has begun. (Click the image at left to buy Futurama Vol. 1 on DVD.)

As a flaming Futurama geek, I want to be thrilled by the prospect of the show's resurrection. But to be honest, the three direct-to-DVD Futurama movies were a mixed bag. They just didn't seem as funny as the original series. The original show was about 90 percent awesome, and its final episode was one of the best series finales I've ever seen. Part of me wonders if it's best to just leave it be. After all, Family Guy fans were ecstatic when the show came back after years off the air... But how thrilled are they now, when Seth McFarlane keeps cranking out one sub-par episode after another?

But it could just be that Futurama doesn't work too well as stand-alone, two-hour movies, and it will really click when it's back as a weekly series. If the series ever really happens.

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
