DODGED BULLETS: Markie Post as ELECTRA WOMAN

Monday, June 8, 2009

In our recurring feature The Neverwas, we look back at potentially great genre projects that fell apart for various reasons... In our new feature Dodged Bullets, we'll showcase terrible genre projects that died just in the nick of time.

First up, the WB's 2001 attempt to revive Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, the Sid and Marty Krofft Saturday morning live-action superhero series from the 1970s. The original series aired as part of the Krofft Supershow anthology show. It was a deliberately campy affair, in the spirit of the Adam West Batman show from the '60s. Here are the super-funky Electra Woman and Dyna Girl titles to give you a taste:

Wow. That was sure a whole lot of '70s at once.

Anyway, in 2001 the WB attempted to revive Electra Woman and Dyna Girl. But they decided to snark the crap out of it, turning it into some dreadful thing where Electra Woman (played by Night Court's Markie Post) had fallen on hard times and become an embittered, sexually promiscuous, trailer park alcoholic. Yes, they actually shot a pilot.

There's a clip below, apparently the only one online. It's extremely pixelated... Unfortunately, it's just clear enough for you to see what's going on. (I'm not sure if I'm hearing it right, but I think there's some very NSFW language here. I assume this would've been bleeped for "comedic" effect in the aired version.) This pilot wasn't picked up as a series, so the WB never subjected us to Dyna Girl kicking a man in the "beanbags."

About This Blog

"Science fiction plucks from within us our deepest fears and hopes, then shows them to us in rough disguise: the monster and the rocket." - W.H. Auden

Who is he, this one who is called "Greg Stacy"?

Greg Stacy began the MONSTERS AND ROCKETS blog in April of 2009. Prior to that, he was editor of the popular sci-fi/horror news website DARKWOLDS.COM. He has also written for LA WEEKLY, OC WEEKLY, UTNE READER and LOS ANGELES CITYBEAT. He always feels weird writing about himself in the third person.
