Del Toro's HOBBIT plans, says HELLBOY 3's off

Friday, June 12, 2009

Talking with BBC Radio 5, director Guillermo del Toro revealed that Hugo Weaving (who played Elrond in the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings movies) will return alongside Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen for the Hobbit movies. He also explained how he plans to expand the one Hobbit novel into two films.

There is a whole other chapter, so to speak, which is the comings and going of Gandalf which are dealt with, people that know the lore know that Gandalf was delayed with a crisis… with a character that is very shady called the Necromancer that proves to be Sauron.

Unfortunately, Del Toro said a third Hellboy picture is unlikely because Ron Perlman doesn't want to wear the prosthetics. Honestly? That sounds like a fib. Perlman's been very gung-ho about the film in every interview I've seen, always saying it was up to Del Toro to find an opening in his busy schedule to get the movie made. (Click the image at left to buy Hellboy II on DVD.)

Finally, Del Toro confirms that another Blade movie is highly unlikely, saying that Wesley Snipes and New Line aren't on "legal speaking terms."

I'm glad you said it, I was thinking the same thing. I read that Del Toro and Mignola were having creative differences regarding the direction of the last film. If I'm remembering correctly, what Perlman has said is that Del Toro is the only person he would consider putting on full make-up for. So if Mignola is thinking of selling the rights to a film maker other than Del Toro, then Perlman would likely not choose to participate.
Could this be the reason?

I hadn't read anything about Del Toro and Mignola not getting along... I'd be interested to see that, if you remember where you saw it. Perlman and Del Toro go back a ways, and Del Toro fought hard for Perlman to get the part. I imagine Perlman wouldn't be too happy about playing the character if somebody else took over the franchise.
