HEATHERS sequel coming
Thursday, June 4, 2009
Out of all the cult hits of the '80s, Heathers seems like one of the least likely to get a sequel. An awful remake, maybe. But a sequel? (Click the image at left to buy Heathers on DVD.) Heathers is not a movie that leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Jeez, Christian Slater dies at the end. (Sorry, maybe I should've included a spoiler warning, there. But hey, the movie is twenty years old.)
Well, unlikely as it seems, Winona Ryder tells the UK's Empire magazine that a sequel is indeed in the works.
"I swear to God," she says. "But for some reason Dan [Waters, writer] and Michael [Lehmann, director] don't want to talk about it."
If the writer and director are trying to keep the project secret, it's probably not too developed yet. And if they've made it clear to Ryder they don't want it discussed publicly, I imagine they're probably not thrilled with her for blabbing about it.
So, Winona, how does the story work around the minor problem of Christian Slater's deadness?
"There is a story, and Christian has agreed to come back as a kind of Obi-Wan character."
I'm already having visions of Winona as a suburban mom with a troubled teenage daughter, and the ghost of Christian Slater keeps whispering in the kid's ear, telling her to bomb the school. That sounds... really dreadful. Here's hoping Lehmann and Waters have better ideas than I do.
