MUSIC FROM SPACE: Foo Fighters - EVERLONG
Tuesday, May 5, 2009
The Foo Fighter's Everlong has one of the most amazing videos I've ever seen... And no wonder. It was directed by Michel Gondry, who would go on to bring us Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, among other mind-blowers. But if he'd never directed anything after the Everlong video, he would have given us enough. His Everlong expertly captures the screwy logic of dreams, the unexplained transitions of locale, the sexy digressions and sudden terrors. I've always found it inexplicably moving... There's something about the way Dave Grohl keeps charging through one bizarre dream scenario after another, desperate to rescue his wife (drummer Taylor Hawkins, looking fetching in drag) from the Teddie Boy Psychos (band members Pat Smear and Nate Mendel, sleazed up beyond recognition.) It's also just a great song, which was especially startling back in the days when people still thought of Grohl as the guy who was supposed to be in the background, pounding the drums in the long, hunched shadow cast by Kurt Cobain. (Click the image at left to buy the band's album The Colour and the Shape, featuring Everlong.)
Lately it seems like every time I look for a video on Youtube to post here, I get hit with the dreaded "Embed disabled by request." I could embed the reverse version of Everlong or the freaky-sounding Microsoft Songsmith version, but not, you know, the actual song. So once again I had to venture beyond Youtube - in this case to Daily Motion. These embeds are risky, so I apologize if you have problems viewing this clip.
